GM William Shelton

Master William Shelton, 8th Dan, Vice-Chairman-AKBBA

Mr. William Shelton is a Korean/American born in 1962 in Seoul, South Korea. His passion for the martial arts began at an early age. While his father was stationed in Germany, he began his studies in the art of kung fu and later began taking Oh Do Kwan Taekwondo.

In 1982 he earned his black belt and currently holds an eighth Dan in Tae Kwon Do and a second Dan in Genjikai Japanese Karate Do. He says he has been very fortunate to have had some of the greatest teachers of the martial arts which include Sifu Aubrey Gregory, Master Norris Weatherall Jr., Master Jim Choate, Master Steve Gann, GM Makio Nishida, GM Larry Wheeler, GM James Tony, and GM Keith Yates.

In 1986 he began competing in the Amateur Organization of Karate and has been a regular top ten competitor ever since, capturing numerous national and state titles as the Texas State Champion as a Black Belt, Executive Black Belt and now as a Senior Executive Black Belt.

He is the Vice Chairman of the High Dan Board of the American Karate Black Belt Association (AKBBA). The High Dan Board for the American Karate Black Belt Association–Chin Sook Hage Kwan is made up of distinguished leaders of the martial arts who must be 8th Dan or higher. They have been elected based on criteria which includes their status as true Texas martial arts pioneers. They set the standards for membership and rank certifications. The High Dan Board serves as the legal Board of Directors of the Corporation.

Through his continued quest for knowledge in the arts, and his accomplishments he has appeared on television shows, and TV commercials where he was able to display his Martial Arts talent, but his true talent lies in his passion for teaching students to be the very best they can be both in and outside the Dojo. William is also highly sought after for private lessons and seminars for both technical expertise and for his weapons skills to further many students’ tournament performance.

The 2017 Champions Cup (see graphic on left) marks GM Shelton's move from a competitor to a promoter.  The June tournament ran flawlessly with Kata and Kumite competitions for both adults and children.

At this year's Gathering Of Eagles, GM Shelton will be teaching Kata and self defense applications.  He is part of our joint sponsorship with GGM Allen Steen and the AKBBA.
